Myth: Breast implants need to be replaced every 10 years…

Women who have breast implants and women who are considering breast implants often wonder about the longevity of the implants and how often they should be replaced. Gossip and theories abound. However, the most current and modern breast implants appear to be quite safe.

Breast implants do not need to be replaced unless a problem occurs with them or the patient wishes to have them adjusted, changed or removed for other reasons. Examples of reasons for removal or exchange may include a desire for the implant to be larger, smaller, or to be changed from saline to silicone. Problems which might occur include rippling, contracture, leak or infection. Such problems are uncommon.

However, most women over then entire course of their lives will likely have additional procedures performed related to their implants for one or more of the above reasons.
